Our big boy!

Jake grows so fast! I feel like almost overnight he has turned into this little boy who understands things that I say, follows (some) directions, and now, sits at the table and uses a spoon eat milk and cereal! He even drinks the milk out of the bowl when he's all done. This may not be a big deal to many non-parents out there, but this is earth shattering over here at the Dougherty household. We have this wonderful little leaf that extends the table but it comes out at a lower height so it is perfect for Jake to eat his food. Now he sits right with us for mealtimes and actually uses a fork and spoon.

Also notice his BLONDE hair! I can't believe how light it's gotten from the sun this summer. It looks like he also has his dad's tan skin tone. He's going to be a heartbreaker!

Phone calls

Jake absolutely loves to talk on the phone. I'm sure that many of the people who read this blog have received random phone calls from Jake (you can usually tell it's Jake if you say "hello? hello?" and there is just silence on the other end...yeah, I thought so!). Usually Jake just takes my cell phone unbeknownst to me and dials random numbers from my contacts list then drops the phone and finds something else that interests him. However, lately Jake has actually been talking to the people that he calls. This afternoon I was in my bedroom and I heard him babbling away. I didn't think anything of it until I heard my mom say "Is that right, Jake? Tell me all about it!" and that's when I realized he had gotten a hold of my phone and called my mom then continued to have a very long conversation with her! He had even pressed the speaker phone button so he could hear better (alright, maybe just a coincedence). I actually wish that I had gotten this on video because he really was having a back and forth conversation with my mom. She would say something then he would respond with "ba la gaga?" and she would answer his question and then he'd say "ya". Sometimes I really think that he understands a lot more than I give him credit for. Cutie!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to all you fathers out there. I know, I know, it's not TECHNICALLY father's day yet, but I'm really just so excited to give Joseph his cookie cake that I just couldn't wait an extra day. And also he's been gone all day working on a project for school so I had a few hours where I could make it to surprise him. As this was my first experience making a cookie cake, let me share with you with some of the things I learned:

1. You need to DOUBLE the recipe! I know you're thinking that combining an entire batch of dough will make one ginormous cookie, but you're sadly mistaken. It will make a cookie the size of your fist. Make sure you have enough ingredients before you have to run to the grocery store in the middle of the recipe because you don't have enough butter.

2. The pizza pan that you bake your cookie cake on should NOT have holes on the bottom. They say that holes on the bottom of your pizza pan will make your pizza crispier. This is not true for giant cookies. Instead, the cookie dough will seep through the holes and splatter your oven with soon-to-be charcoal pieces of giant cookie.

3. Find a good frosting recipe - they do not exhist on allrecipes.com. The ones from this supposedly great recipe website do not work. They are runny and not substantial enough to hold their shape. Nor are they fluffy.

Despite these setbacks, this is how my first cookie-cake turned out (sorry, you're going to have to turn your head sideways for this one, for some reason the computer keeps making the picture turn...):
Happy Father's Day, Joseph!! We love you so much, and are so grateful for everything that you do for us.

More family pics!

Our family pictures are here! I've been trying to revisualize the picture situation in our home before I put them up on the walls, which I can't wait to do! Here are some of our favorites:

This is when Jake had just fallen down and hurt his head...his face is so sad, but I love that he needed his mom...And he's happy again!

They turned out pretty good didn't they?! Which are your favorites???

The new passion

Joseph has a new love in his life which he obsesses over day and night: softball! Ok, it's not that bad, but he did tell me that he gets more anxious for his city-league softball games than his midterm exams!! A bunch of guys in his dental school class got together and formed a team that is sponsored by Oral-B. They have a game every Tuesday evening. Jake and I have only been able to go to one game so far since it has either been raining or way past Jake's bedtime by the time the game starts, but it is a lot of fun nonetheless! I got a matching t-shirt with the team logo on it, and Jake has his own toddler chair that nana got him which he brings to the games and LOVES to sit in. We are definitely the #1 fans. You may be surprised, but I like to cheer really loud for Joseph (what? that doesn't surprise you?), so basically you could hear my voice yelling a mile away...maybe two. Jake also likes to watch his dad and he gets excited when he waves to him from the dugout or the outfield. That makes two of us I guess. :)

Can't you tell he loves softball?!

My husband's #1

Although Joseph and I have shared many experiences together, yesterday was a first for our marriage. It was tough for me, but I pushed my fears aside and supported my husband as his first official dental patient. Now that they are almost done with their first year of dental school, they can finally clean people's teeth!

The two avid readers of my blog probably know from my previous post that I particularly loathe the dentist office. However, although I was stressed out leaving Jake with a friend for the whole afternoon knowing that he hadn't gotten a morning nap (I tried for two hours to get him to go to sleep), I was a little excited to see Joseph decked out in his scrubs and looking all professional. And believe me, he looked professional. In fact, it was so professional that he introduced me to his professor as "Angela, my patient" instead of "Angela, my wife". He looked at my chart and asked me such questions as, "Do you smoke tobacco? If so, how often?" and "When was your last visit to your doctor?" I don't think he necessarily appreciated that I was laughing through the whole thing. He did a fantastic job, though, and I was actually the first one done! He says it's because there wasn't a whole lot to clean on my teeth, but I think he's just a fabulous dentist. Too bad all this practice cleaning teeth will probably be for nothing since he's not going to be doing it in his practice anyway! But either way, the important thing is that my husband was hot in his scrubs and that I now have a gleaming smile. Thanks babe, I love you!

Hmm...This is a much different reaction to the dentist than normal...I think I may be making headway here.

Family pics

My friend Jessica Sorensen is a photographer, and a couple of weeks ago she took family pictures for us. She did such an awesome job and I can't wait to see the rest of the pictures that she took. You can see a preview on mommycreationsphotography.blogspot.com. Thanks again, Jessica! I know it's not easy working with my very energetic son, but you got some great pictures in the end!
